Cinego's two-day event in support of World Mental Health Day 2021 also features these powerful short films from women.
1. HOLDING ON (Dir. Laura Petrone and Guillaume Kerbush), Belgium
The actors Laura Petrone and Amandine Rajau delivered honest performances as a daughter and mother fighting a critical illness and experiencing the relationship challenges that goes along with it. Holding On is effective in making the viewers witness the many layers of emotions brought by their life condition that you will almost want to embrace the characters and give them comfort.
Film available until October 10, 2021: https://youtu.be/T5-TI5HZvzQ
2. CASIMIRA (Dir. Carolina Fuentealba), Chile
The film is about an 80-year old woman who chose to uphold her independence but faces a great challenge. Fuentealba's film is visually beautiful and there's something romantic about the combination of the character's voice and the cinematic frames. The film is missing subtitles though. But if you understand Spanish, Casimira is definitely worth watching.

3. THANKS FOR SAVING MY LIFE (Dir. Ploychompu Dajpradang), Thailand
This documentary follows two young women. Fahsai has bipolar disorder. She reads from her notebook to make us understand her real thoughts that can possibly be unnoticed from her fun and outgoing personality. While Numnim has depression disorder and shares the challenge of speaking about it to her parents. Their own (unexpected) reasons to live fully bring a message of hope.

4. ABOUT FINE LINES (Dir. Dayana Emtyl & Anastasia Sakvina), Russia
This animated short film about understanding relationship borders is both informative and insightful. Messages are presented in a tone that is easy to comprehend regardless of which side of the line one is. The visuals are not just playful but also experimental complementing the play of words "drawing the line."
